Dr
Peter Hardy Smith
MB, BS, FRANZCO, FRACS, FRCS(Eng)
Dr Hardy-Smith graduated from the University of Melbourne and undertook
his training in ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
After completing his term as Senior Resident at Moorfields, he returned
to Australia and commenced private practice in Collins St Melbourne.
After some years in Collins St he commenced a branch practice in
Box Hill and subsequently practised full-time at the Box Hill Gardens
Medical Centre before transferring his practice to the North Balwyn
Eye Clinic and Laser Centre where he continues to practise on a
part-time basis.
Over
the years he has held public hospital; appointments at the Royal
Melbourne Hospital, Repatriation General Hospital (Veterans' Affairs),
Box Hill Hospital (where he was senior ophthalmologist) and in the
Retina Unit of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear hospital. He is also
a Consultant ophthalmologist to the Royal Australian Navy.
Outside
the clinical area, he has served as Chairman of the Ophthalmic Research
Institute of Australia and on various committees and sub-committees
of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists
at both State and Federal level; in 1989-90 he served as President
of the College.
He
is one of two Australian representatives on the International Council
of Ophthalmology and recently completed his appointment as President
of the XXIX International (World) Congress of Ophthalmology at which
he was presented with the Louis Emile Javal Gold Award for his contribution
to international ophthalmology.
